We love our peaceful days at sea but our most memorable moments are always the ones shared with friends.  Which is why this week we decided to take all our new Filipino friends sailing.  Because they have shared so much of their world with us, now we want to show them a little of ours.

_______________________________

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.

We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.

Things We're Most Curious About...

GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.

TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.

Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.

ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.

Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

Sailing with Locals in Palawan – An Unforgettable Adventure

Last summer, we had the incredible opportunity to spend time with a local family from El Nido in the beautiful province of Palawan, Philippines. This remarkable encounter allowed us to dive deep into Filipino culture and experience the unparalleled warmth and inviting nature of its people. As travelers who strive for genuine connections while exploring new horizons, this chapter has become one of our most cherished memories to date.

An Island Haven

Upon arrival in Palawan, we were welcomed by the charming and vibrant island town, with bustling public markets held daily. This not only allowed us to indulge in local produce such as fresh coconuts, fish, and various greens but also helped us experience Filipino cuisine in its purest form.

Friendships and Food

As our adventure unfolded, a remarkable bond was forged with Sid and his family. We quickly discovered that food plays an essential role in Filipino culture – just like sailing does for us. The passion with which we both share these loves brought us closer together.

Setting Sail

When Sid offered to take us on a sailing adventure in our new catamaran, we were thrilled. It gave us the opportunity to demonstrate a bit of what life onboard is like for us. With eager helpers ready to trim the sails and steer the boat, we began our journey into open waters.

The Beauty of Local Connections

Sharing this experience with local friends made our time in Palawan truly special. The hospitality and warmth shown by the locals, from Sid’s family to his friends Hir, Cat, Sophie, Ocean, Sky, and El Zen, allowed us not only to enjoy their island home but also learn more about the customs and history that shape Filipino life.

Momentous Memories

During our adventures in Palawan, we experienced firsthand how a sailing community extends beyond borders. The shared love of the water brought us together and fostered connections that transcend different cultures and lifestyles.

Celebrating the Moment

Our incredible day culminated in an impromptu celebration, sharing some bubbly to mark the occasion. As the sun began to set on this enchanting island paradise, we gathered around with our new friends and toasted to unforgettable memories made during our sailing adventures.

Embracing Authenticity

Hir’s love for the authentic essence of sailing truly resonated with us. The conversation revolved around the importance of maintaining tradition, hard work, and a strong connection to one’s roots, which we admire.

Looking Ahead

As our adventures continue, these precious moments remain etched in our hearts. The connections made and the friendships established will forever remind us of the transformative power of travel. Sailing with locals in Palawan holds a special place in our memories – not just as another chapter of our journey but also a testament to the warmth and beauty found in human interactions.

Embarking on Your Own Adventure

While our adventures may take us to far-flung destinations, we believe that the essence of exploration lies not only in discovering new horizons but also finding connections with people along the way. If you’re interested in embarking on a similar adventure or seeking more tips and inspiration for your next journey, follow our voyage as we share insights into navigating local waters, fostering meaningful connections, and experiencing cultures up close.

Special Thanks

A special thank you to Sid, Cat, Sophie, Ocean, Sky, El Zen, Hir, and their family for welcoming us into their world. Their hospitality, friendship, and passion for life made our sailing experience in Palawan an unforgettable adventure we will cherish forever.
