Martin from M Jambo | Shipwreck, Resilience & Love Across the Oceans - LWP #2
Sometimes, two sailing journeys become connected long before the sailors ever meet.
During my preparations for my own solo circumnavigation, I followed Martin's adventures aboard Jambo. When his mast broke, I was struck by the challenges he faced.
I departed from the Netherlands in July 2023, and when I arrived in Cape Verde, I received the devastating news that Jambo had sunk on her way to South Africa. Martin had been rescued from his liferaft.
But his sailing story didn't end there. He bought an Amel Mango, named Comeback, and began a new chapter.
Now, our paths have finally crossed in Réunion, where we sat down for a deeply personal conversation about what happens when life at sea takes an unexpected turn.
We talk about shipwrecks, setbacks and the courage it takes to start again. How do you deal with losing something you've invested so much of yourself in? Where do you find the strength to continue when your plans fall apart?
We also explore another side of sailing around the world: relationships across the oceans. Martin's wife and my husband don't sail with us, but they visit us along the way. How do we navigate love, independence and connection when our lives unfold across different parts of the world?
This is a conversation about much more than sailing. It's about resilience, starting over, the people who stand beside us, and finding the courage to keep following our own course — even when the sea has other plans.
Because sometimes, a comeback is not about returning to the life you had before. It's about discovering what comes next.
