You can’t set foot on The Poor Knights, there are no beaches there and the anchoring is limited and tricky. However, with its isolation from the mainland and marine reserve status, it has prospered without too much human interaction. For this reason, it is now one of our favourite spots in NZ.
The fish life is astonishing, the underwater vegetation is beautiful, and it holds the crown of the world’s largest sea cave by volume in Rikoriko cave (221 by 494 cubic metres), twice the volume of two other sea caves that claim this status.
We love it here, can you tell? It was sad to leave. However, on our trip down the Northland coast Javelot crossed paths with a very laid back hammerhead shark who entertained us for a minute or two.
