Welcome aboard SV Nakama, We are Slim & Soph a young Aussie couple tryna get by living aboard our tiny retro sailboat with our cat Chilli. We sail the Australian coastline whilst attending university online and take you with us. After putting study on the back burner for years as we didn’t want to sacrifice adventure, we thought why not have both? Fed up with the outrageous rental prices in our hometown, the idea of doing it afloat came to mind. We figured we could scrape by on our tight student budget if we stopped paying way too much rent and lived minimally on the ocean, whilst continuing our passion for adventure. The plan for now, is to keep sailing onwards, keeping Australia to our left and once we're done doing that...Who knows. Our mission is to prove that anyone can do it, you don’t need the fanciest boat or a squillion bucks, just a whole lot of ambition and a willingness to make mistakes and learn. We can’t believe they let us inside, we have been let loose inside a sailmakers loft in Airlie beach with the guidance of our good friend and marine trimmer Sue.
It’s no secret Nakama’s canvas work needs some serious love. A boom bag has been on our wish list for years and our poor old dodger is no longer hanging on by a thread but patched up with duct tape sporting more holes than fabric the dodgy dodger is more of a representation of a dodger than an actual dodger.
After a cracking sail, we crack into the work on our first attempt at D.I.Y marine trimming at the local sailmaker’s loft. We are so grateful to have been given the opportunity to work in this space and learn an abundance of knowledge about a whole other side of boating.
