A Massive Storm Caught Us Off Guard ⚡️🌊
We set out to visit Makatea Island, but huge waves forced us to change course, sailing an extra day to the nearest safe anchorage. Just as we started to relax, a terrifying lightning storm rolled in, passing directly over us! The thunder was deafening, the sky turned white with flashes, and our biggest fear? One direct strike could fry our electronics—or worse. 😨
To make things even more intense, our friends were out in a kayak when the storm hit, disappearing into the chaos. With visibility near zero and the wind picking up, we dragged anchor and had to fight to keep our boat in position. Other sailors in this atoll were struck by lightning just months ago, so we knew the risks were real.
Once the storm cleared, we scrambled to check on our friends, reconnect with nearby boats, and prepare for an exciting moment—Brioni’s parents finally arrived! After years apart, emotions were running high, and we couldn’t wait to welcome them aboard.
