Freedom! We’re out of the marina and boatyard and back in the ocean, goodbye Ty!

New Rig, No Reefing!

It’s time to bid farewell to Thailand and embark on our journey towards Africa. Our new rig is ready for the challenge of painting the capping rails. After masking off the cap, we use acetone to strip it back. We’ve chosen a clear-coated polyurethane for the capping rails as it offers a hard finish that can be sanded and polished if desired.

In Southeast Asia, many claim the polyurethane cracks under UV exposure, so it’s crucial to stay vigilant while sanding and recoating. Although varnish is susceptible to peeling off after a few months, requiring yearly reapplication.

We’re about to leave the tropics behind us and set sail for South Africa, so these capping rails might just last longer under different conditions. We’re venturing into uncharted territory, learning as we go along with this trial-and-error process.

Heading Towards Lao

We’re also bidding goodbye to a lot of resources available in Phuket. Now’s the time to purchase anything we need before it becomes scarce or unavailable at our next port of call in Malaysia.

Shopping and Last-Minute Purchases

In addition to buying supplies, we discovered a small issue with our spinnaker pole, preventing us from stowing it away on the mast. Nevertheless, we’ve continued moving forward with preparation, running errands in the late-night hours.

Saying Goodbye to Thailand

It’s a bit of an emotional departure, leaving Thailand behind. The memories made here are significant for both Lula and Tulula, as it marks the end of an era spent sailing through Southeast Asia.

Final Preparations

The last-minute touches are essential before departing. We’re finalizing the rigging and securing everything to ensure a seamless transition from Thailand to Africa. Our crew’s preparedness plays a significant role in our journey.

Embracing Adventure

We’ve adjusted the rigging settings and started our journey. Embracing the adventure before us, we’re excited for what lies ahead. Our next major destination is the island of Lanai, where more preparations await.

The feeling of freedom and open waters beneath the hull of this boat never gets old.

The Journey Begins

As we sail towards Africa, the challenges lie not only on the high seas but in our hearts too. Saying goodbye to a place filled with memories is never easy.

The anticipation for what lies ahead fills our hearts with a mix of trepidation and excitement.

Looking Forward

The adventure has only just begun. The open ocean awaits, promising new experiences, challenges, and memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Goodbye to Thailand, hello Africa – the journey continues!
