IT'S OFFICIAL! We have sailed across the Atlantic Ocean! Arriving to French Guiana and the Salvation Islands. Home to a notorious penal colony where the book Papillion was based.
From the early 1850s, and for almost a century after, France transported prisoners sentenced to hard labour across the Atlantic Ocean to French Guiana, with the Salvation Islands becoming one of the most notorious parts of the penal colony. Surrounded by ocean and strong currents, escape was considered almost impossible.
I think that’s part of the reason Papillon’s story captured the imagination of so many. Henri Charrière was certainly a great storyteller, but as time has gone on, it seems the man behind Papillon wasn’t going to let the truth get in the way of a good yarn.
Many of the stories he told are now believed to have been borrowed from the experiences of other prisoners. But whether every adventure was truly his or not, the horrors he described were very real, and the salvation islands became the centrepiece of his story.
And our first impression, it’s hard to wrap your head around it. Surrounded by palm trees and a tropical landscape, these beautiful islands housed so many horrors and was once home to one of the most feared penal colonies in the world.
