Before Bonita and Tallula went travelling around Sri Lanka with Nanna, and before I set off to sail across the Indian Ocean… First, we sailed as a family over 1000 nautical miles from Langkawi, Malaysia to reach the city of Padang, Indonesia where we parted ways.
Travelling through the west sumatran islands is not new territory for us, we have been visiting this area for years and it is a place we hold dearly and have a lot fo love for. Being a cruiser and travelling to remote places, means we try our best to be prepared and 100% self sufficient. We carry spares for almost everything, although with a forecast of light conditions and not much wind through the islands, we will have to source diesel… THIS COULD BE A PROBLEM.... At least the fishing line is running hot!

Sailing Indonesia with Nandji Family | Ep 363: Diesel Dilemma and Fuel Frustrations
In the latest episode of their Indonesian cruising adventures, the Nandji family encounters a significant diesel challenge that tests their resilience on their sailing journey from Langkawi, Malaysia to Pangkor, Indonesia. The family separates at the bustling city of Pangkor to explore different routes across West Sumatra’s beautiful islands. As self-sufficient cruisers with spares for almost everything on board Ang, they face unexpected fuel problems after purchasing diesel in Sabang.
The motor conks out multiple times despite having new filters installed. The issue appears to stem from the recently purchased fuel. Key details:

- Diesel issue leads to sailing away from land using remaining wind

Indonesia has different grades of diesel:
- Solar, or bio-solar, is cheaper but not suitable for engines due to encouraging diesel bug formation.
- Dex diesel: more expensive but preferable for its better performance and quality.
Nandji explains how a service station’s lack of Dex fuel results in wasted effort. Despite the challenges posed by Indonesia’s cruising conditions, the family cherishes the beauty and friendliness of its people.
