Living in a small sailboat while sailing around the world has an ironic side to it. Just like we adjust our sails to the wind we adjust our lives for the small space. What becomes non essential is replaced by functional and purposeful. hopefully multi- useable. The purse full of makeup, lotions, and perfume is replaced with a bag full of knives, pliers, and bug spray. Everything becomes waterproof and or rusty.
What goes in your bag are the essentials that make the moment safe and more enjoyable. The Pliers first job is removing the cholla (jumping cactus) from hopefully your shoes but sometimes your skin. Yes I carry them everywhere. Bug spray replaces perfume. we try to only use it when the bugs come out. you do not want to be stuck with out it or those mosies will suck you dry leaving you one huge swollen squish mound. I’ve used the knive more times out on the boat than I ever did at home. Sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen….no need for lotion when your applying and reapplying the screen to keep your skin from burning.
The bag evolves with the activity at hand and new experiences that pop up. I’ve given up the finer unnecissary items for this life we are living and some days I dont look back. Buy a Boat he said!
