Sailing in strong wind and building seas!

Sailing downwind in 25 knots, towards a pinch point in the Gulf of California. Was this a wise decision? In our defense the forecast was for 15 knots with 20 knot gusts.
The winds ended up being 25 knots gusting to 33 knots. We survived with 2 reefs in our main and very little sleep. We were sailing and surfing along at a top speed of 11 knots!! We had know idea that Hiraya could move that fast!

What a Ride!!

Sailing in Strong Wind: An Epic Baja Adventure

After two years, we returned to our favorite spot – Santa Rosalia in Baja California. Our journey from Penasco marks our longest passage and was filled with strong winds and challenging sea conditions. Here’s a detailed account of what we encountered on this unforgettable sail. The Start of Our Epic Sail Our adventure began on an unusually calm day – just as planned. We took the time to make sure everything was in order before leaving. Although there wasn’t much wind, it promised a beautiful sail downwind with our favorite destination waiting for us. A Whale of an Encounter! Just as we began our journey, the wind decided to play its part in making this trip memorable. A breaching whale nearly scared us off when it surfaced so close to our boat! However, the excitement of seeing such a magnificent creature didn’t last long. The Longest Night The wind vanished as night fell. We switched on the engine and motored most of the night until dawn brought with it a little breeze to fill our sails. Navigating the Dangerous ‘Cup’ The dangerous cup was looming ahead. Narrowing down from 80 miles wide, with steep waves and strong winds, it seemed like our toughest challenge yet. But, as soon as we passed through, calm waters welcomed us once more. The Docking Drama We arrived at Santa Rosalia with wind still strong and a plan to dock. However, the excitement of our sail had yet to end. As we approached the marina, the winds intensified even more! But after a tense moment or two, we successfully managed to tie up. Reflections and Lessons Learnt Our journey covered 255 miles, with an average speed of five knots. It was the longest we’ve sailed at one time so far. Despite the challenges faced during our adventure in strong winds,
“The minute we left the dock and found water, our attitudes were instantly adjusted.”
We sailed with a newfound sense of confidence. We’re now eager for more experiences like this on our journey through the Baja waters. Santa Rosalia: A Special Arrival The crew at Santa Rosalia remembered us from our previous visit and welcomed us back with open arms. After a filling meal, we settled in for some well-needed rest. Our Final Thoughts As the adventure concludes, we’re reminded that even though the winds were strong, it only made our experience more unforgettable. The excitement of each moment is what sailing in strong wind is all about – keeping us on our toes while reminding us of nature’s power and beauty. Join Us for More Adventures! Trying to make a small sailboat feel bigger, is it possible?

Hiraya is a 1978 Tartan 34c with a beam of 10' 2" at its widest point. We love our sailboat, but she seems a little bit cave like sometimes. Our plan? Try to make her feel bigger on the inside then she really is. Remove some bulkheads, paint some walls,...
