All of our sailboat repair and maintenance blogs are now hosted on our dedicated maintenance channel, MOTHERSHIP MAINTENANCE Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/c/mothershipmaintenance
An edited version of this video is now hosted there.
So how does a cooling system on a marine diesel engine work and how do you dismantle it to clean it? In this mini series of maintenance videos, I take apart the raw water cooling system of our Volvo Penta TMD22 marine diesel engine and quickly learn it’s not as simple as it first seemed.
In this first video (Part 1 of 3 videos) I dismantle and clean the muffler box, exhaust elbow, turbo and check the impeller and pipes. I also replace the water pump gasket and find a lot of calcium deposits inside the pipes which could indicate potential problems inside the heat exchanger.
In Part 2: https://youtu.be/tUUGm-2ctIw – I dismantle and clean the oil cooler.
In Part 3: https://youtu.be/ZaBx8puvBDQ – I dismantle and clean the heat exchanger and put the whole thing back together!
Although these videos show maintenance work on a TMD22 marine diesel engine, many components and assembly techniques are similar across the Volvo Penta range, including: MD22L; MD22P; MD22L-B; MD22P-B; TMD22-B; TMD22P-C; TAMD22P-B; HS25A; HS25A-B; 120S-E; MS2A-E; MS2L-E; MS2B-L; TMD22B
