The Last Sail in the Tuamotus | Episode 254

Welcome back to another episode of WE|Sail, this week we set sail leaving the stunning island of Tahanea and overnight sail to Fakarava, our last stop in the Tuamotus before moving on. Sad to be leaving these picture perfect islands, but thrilled to get to experience them one last good time.

We arrive to Fakarava and get sorted to dive right away, only to be shocked at what we see below the surface. A lot has changed since we were here last and not for the better sadly.

The Last Sail in the Tuamotus | Episode 254

After three wonderful weeks in Taha, it’s time to move on and head to one of our other favorite spots, Fakarava. We’ve had an absolutely beautiful and amazing time here in French Polynesia, but we must remember that our time is getting short before we have to check out of this country.

Our plan was to sail through the night to reach Fakarava South Pass in the morning. With only around 50 miles left, we decided not to use the motor so we can take it slowly and ensure we arrive with daylight when entering the pass.

The Perilous Passage

Upon leaving Taha, we faced challenging currents which led us on a perilous but thrilling ride. The DRs followed us curiously while our attention remained fixed on maneuvering through treacherous waves. It’s not every day you get a shark escort home during such a wild ride!

Troubleshooting the Dive Compressor

During our time in Taha, we encountered an issue with the dive compressor’s automatic purge valve draining our tank’s water due to a small gasket rupture. However, as hoarders might say, sometimes it pays off! We managed to fix the problem using an alternative piece of rubber material and continued diving.

Fakarava Arrival

We successfully reached Fakarava at around 5:45 in the morning when the sun rose. Our journey through the South Pacific had become increasingly challenging, but we were grateful to finally set anchor in this serene location after our thrilling night sail.

Underwater Catastrophe

The OFA South Pass dive site is one of our most cherished locations within French Polynesia. Over the last two years, Warren and I have dove here over 70 times together. However, upon descending into the depths during this particular visit, we were met with a devastating sight.

What once was a vibrant underwater paradise had now transformed into an eerie coral graveyard. We knew right away what we were witnessing – a stark reminder of the fragility of our oceans and the consequences of climate change. Coral bleaching events due to rising sea temperatures had wreaked havoc on this delicate ecosystem, leaving behind a ghostly barren landscape.

A Glimmer of Hope

Though it’s heartbreaking to see such damage firsthand, we must remember that our planet is resilient and it’s up to us to protect and nurture it for future generations. Despite witnessing the underwater catastrophe during this episode, we continue on our journey to share experiences and awareness about preserving these precious natural wonders.

As sailors and explorers, our mission extends beyond just navigating waters; we strive to be advocates of environmental preservation and spread awareness to inspire change.
