Living Like the Locals in Remote French Polynesia | Episode 253

Hey welcome back everyone! This week we have so much fun celebrating a birthday with Brian from @svdelos where we help him celebrate by foil boarding across a whole atoll lagoon! Then we go on another crab hunt, this time for the much larger coconut crabs. We do our best to prepare and cook them as the locals have for so many years.

Coconut Crab Hunting Adventure in Remote French Polynesia | Episode 253

In this latest episode of WE Sail’s circumnavigation of the world, they dive into a unique island adventure – hunting for coconut crabs in one of French Polynesia’s remote, less-visited spots. As nature enthusiasts from WE Sail often share on their YouTube channel, these beautiful, unspoiled islands are a paradise like no other. They’re perfect for reconnecting with nature and living in harmony with the environment, which is exactly what the couple had hoped to achieve when leaving their hectic life behind in Colorado.

The pristine natural beauty around these islands truly takes unspoiled to another level. Their experiences bring out a childlike sense of wonder and curiosity, allowing them the freedom to explore without constraints and soak in every moment. What follows is an enchanting journey filled with discovering hidden gems, connecting with locals like Nico, who invites them on a coconut crab hunt, and enjoying an evening under the stars by cooking up these delicacies on the beach.

The Coconut Crab Hunt Experience

These nocturnal creatures are highly sought after for their meaty delicacy, but also because of their massive claws that can cause damage to unsuspecting humans. The team’s pursuit is a learning experience, demonstrating sustainable hunting techniques as they work closely with Nico, who has lived in the area for years and knows these islands well.

Sustainability is key when it comes to preserving these unique creatures’ populations which grow slowly and reproduce sparingly. Over-hunting and over-harvesting are major threats due to their slow growth rate, so respecting local traditions and taking only what is necessary are important considerations during a hunt like this.

Cooking Up a Coconut Crab Feast

With the crabs caught, the crew gets creative, using simple ingredients like rice and coconut to prepare a hearty meal. The process involves stripping coconuts, preparing the rice with the juices, and boiling the crabs over an open fire on the beach. Despite some challenges, including near-constant rain showers, they manage to cook up a delicious feast featuring these unique creatures.

A Day of Firsts and Celebrations

The day also celebrates a birthday, adding an extra layer of joy and excitement to their island escapades. Birthday wishes, beachside foiling, and even a successful coconut crab hunt combine to make this episode unforgettable.

Why Hunt Coconut Crabs?

In this isolated part of the world, living like the locals means embracing traditional hunting practices that support sustainable lifestyles. While not everyone may be up for an adventure such as this, it offers valuable insights into local island culture and how these traditions contribute to preserving natural beauty and resources.

What’s Next for WE Sail?

Their ongoing circumnavigation of the world continues, promising more beautiful landscapes, challenging expeditions, and rich cultural encounters. With their commitment to sustainability and enjoying nature’s bounty responsibly, WE Sail invites viewers to come along for a journey that balances adventure with respect for the natural world.

If you’re inspired by their adventures in remote French Polynesia and interested in similar island exploration, remember always to treat these beautiful environments with care. Hunting, like the coconut crab hunt showcased in this episode, should be approached responsibly and always under guidance from locals who understand these ecosystems best.
