After completing our Atlantic crossing from Bermuda to the Azores aboard our Kadey Krogen 55, with our dog, we finally arrive in the legendary sailing port of Horta on Faial Island. We expected a warm welcome, incredible scenery, and a chance to relax after nearly 2,500 miles at sea. What we didn’t expect was one of the busiest anchorages we’ve ever seen.
With boats packed into the harbor, finding a safe place to anchor became an adventure of its own. But once ashore, Horta quickly showed us why sailors from around the world fall in love with this place. Rolling green hills, dramatic cloud-covered landscapes, affordable food and wine, local cheeses, welcoming people, and the unique atmosphere that has made Horta a rite of passage for Atlantic cruisers.
