We thought the 19-hour crossing from Falmouth, Cornwall, across the Bristol Channel to Milford Haven would be routine.
Instead, it changed how we cruise forever.
After more than 9,000 miles of passagemaking—including a 2,000-mile Atlantic crossing—we’d become a little too confident. The Bristol Channel and Irish Sea had other ideas. What was meant to be a straightforward passage became one of the most uncomfortable we’ve experienced, reminding us that the sea has a remarkable way of keeping egos in check.
Safely alongside in Milford Haven, everything slowed down. We explored one of Wales’ best cruising destinations, discovered fantastic restaurants, spectacular beaches, incredible dog walks through beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline with Gypsy, and took time to reflect on what this crossing had taught us.
For months we’d been chasing destinations. Somewhere between Cornwall and Wales, we realised we’d rather enjoy the journey than simply survive it. From now on, questionable weather no longer dictates our schedule. If the conditions don’t feel right, we’ll wait. There is no finish line.
