Teak-Tok – The boat refit continues…

Never mind Tik Tok, we're all about Teak-Tok right now! Either the real deal (for a fibreglass boat we seem to have an inordinate amount of teak on board!), or the imitation teak Laminex Julian is painstakingly re-cladding all the interior cabinetry with. This is only a fraction of what's...

Time Warp to Passage Peak

Having a brief break from boat work to do a photography job for a friend, and took the additional opportunity to A) tackle Hamilton Island's Passage Peak, and B) test the Time Warp function on the new GoPro Hero 9. It's Hyperlapse made super easy and without a gimbal! Here's a quick...

How to survive an Australian summer of boat work ⛵️🥵

Welcome to Part 3 of our interior boat refit documentary series, which sees us sweat through the hottest part of the Australian summer heat 🥵 It's also where we install our first pieces of laminex, make DIY non-skid for our timberwork, and keep chasing down those deck leaks, with a whole lot of...

How to get started on bringing a boat back to its former glory (Boat Refit Documentary – Part 2

They say the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. This "one-step-at-a-time" philosophy definitely rings true for anyone working on a boat refit. As if we didn't know already, documenting our yacht restoration journey and watching the footage back, has reinforced what ...

Deck Work

We've been taking advantage of the latest weather window to carry on chasing the leaks. This means it's been all about deck work on the good ship Brilliant II in the last 2 weeks. But while the interior may have stalled, the work topsides will be well worth it in the end. Like all boat wo...

Highlights of the last three weeks' boat work include: 🤪 Redefining tolerance for mess 🦶🏻Discovering Julian's toe-tapping telephone twitch 🥵 Melting in the heat 💦 Drowning in the downpours 🦶🏻🦶🏻Perfecting the art of traditional non-skid application (silica sand instead of store-bought tape...

Progress!

We're moving in the right direction 🙌 In the last couple of weeks, teak veneer has been re-installed on the major bulkheads, broken trims have been fixed, and the first coat of varnish has been applied to all the fixed timbers onboard. Now to keep on keeping calm, and varnish on!! 🤣

Keep Calm and Varnish On!

Another milestone moment reached in the interior reno - three coats of varnish on all the removable timber parts and some more leaks chased down in the rain.

How to pull apart the interior of a 43-year-old boat ⛵️🤯 (Boat Refit Documentary – Part 1)

Over the past few months, a couple of people have asked us exactly what we're doing on our interior refit, and (more importantly) how we're doing it. As a result, I've cut together the time-lapse videos we've posted to date with segments shot in real time, giving an explanation ...

Swimming in a sea of sawdust!

As well as work 💻, Christmas 🎄, New Year 🍾, and a lightning trip to Cairns, the last four weeks have been about literally swimming in a sea of sawdust. We decided to include the cabin sole ( 'floor' for landlubbers) in our interior renovation, and boy, were there days I regretted that dec...

Boat work – the new pilates!

Things we have learned in weeks 3-4 of the interior refit: 🤪 Boat work is like pilates - you need to be some kind of contortionist 🥵 Attempting a refit at the start of the Australian summer is batshit crazy 🤯 Attempting a refit while juggling work, school and any kind of life is also batshit crazy ...

The interior renovation begins!

Because we really needed something else to do!! 🤯 We've been chasing leaks through the boat for years so we could get to an interior reno. It started with a bang 11 years ago when I fell pregnant with Josh, but having a baby meant it all stopped at the baby's cabin. Suddenly, work resume...

The Whitsunday wonderland of Waite Bay

Being on the outer fringes of the main Whitsunday island group, Waite Bay is somewhere we only get to about once a year. It's apparently a bit of a feeder reef for the area, so it was really sad to see how much it suffered from the effects of Cyclone Debbie in 2017. Happily, on our most recent ...

Walking in a winter wonderland – Whitsundays style

When we're not feeling energetic enough to tackle Whitsunday Peak, there's another fantastic little track we traverse from the anchorage at Cid Harbour. Strolling from Sawmill Bay to Dugong Beach (or vice versa), is a lovely way to while away an hour or so, which is about what it takes to...

For the love of Langford Island – The Whitsundays

It's places like Langford Island that really epitomise why we've stayed in the Whitsundays so long. With 74 islands on our doorstep, there's always more to explore, and some places that are just gems. Langford is one of the diamonds. Just 14 miles or an easy 2.5 hour run from our m...

Behind the scenes – what really happened on the Whitsunday Peak walk 🤣

My close friends know I like a good walk. They also know my husband Julian hates walking. Happily I have a couple of hiking buddies, but every now and again Julian gets dragged along in an attempt to maintain some sort of fitness (not to mention our marital bliss). We've somehow been climbin...

Conquering Whitsunday Peak

In his fabulous Whitsunday cruising guide "100 Magic Miles", David Colfelt describes Whitsunday Peak as one of the most challenging walks of the region's Ngaro Sea Trail. The thing is, once you've climbed the 437-metre slope, the rewards are worth it. Panoramic views of the Whi...

Getting up-close-and-personal with the Whitsundays’ Maori Wrasse at Manta Ray Bay

Manta Ray Bay on the north coast of Hook Island in the main Whitsunday group. is renowned for its friendly fish. Big ones. It's the place to go if you want to see George - who was also known as 'Auntie Albert' when I first sailed to the Whitsundays many years ago. The 'auntie&...

The day we had world-famous Whitehaven Beach all to ourselves

One of the more positive by-products of Covid-19 was a rare opportunity to enjoy 24 hours at world-famous Whitehaven Beach entirely alone. Well, when I say entirely alone, I mean us three humans, about a million butterflies, and one very hungry goanna. This seven-kilometre stretch of silica sand i...

Chalkie’s Beach – The Whitsundays

Queensland National Parks & Wildlife Service (QPWS) have been doing a fabulous job upgrading the lookouts and walking tracks around the Whitsundays. One of the newest additions to the Whitsunday islands' tourism offering is the short walking track from Chalkie's Beach, which leads to ...
