How To Go Stainless In The Galley | Boat Refit Documentary Part 9
With the gas disconnected and the stove out, this was the time for us to address the galley area around the Force 10 cooktop and oven.
We wanted to replace the old, dark, peeling teak veneer with something lighter, brighter and easier to keep clean.
Looking at home and commercial kitchens, we got the idea for stainless steel.
Having seen a couple of videos where stainless steel 'look' Laminex had been used for this purpose, we knew we didn't want to go down that route.
In our opinion, it just didn't look nearly as good as the real deal.
So... why not use the real deal?
Enter our friends Alec and Annie at Airlie Beach Welding and Fabrication (https://www.airliewelding.com.au).
Julian made up plywood and custom board patterns, which their team then turned into stainless steel plates and channels.
Julian then glued these in place using Sikaflex, and 'voila'!
The result is, well, see for yourself!!...

Join the Smallwoods - Sharon, Julian, Josh, and Pepe (the Blue Burmese) - aboard Sailing Vessel Brilliant II. Brilliant II is a Kelly Peterson 44, built in 1978. Julian and Sharon bought the boat in Phuket, Thailand, in 2005, and sailed her slowly back to Sydney, Australia. Over the next five years they lived aboard and sailed the coasts of New South Wales and Queensland. They are currently based in the Whitsundays, Queensland, where Josh was born in 2010. In 2021 they began a refit of the water-damaged interior (which had needed doing since the start!), while continuing to sail on mini-adventures north and south of their home port. Sharon is a photojournalist by trade, but realising YouTube is a thing has started creating videos too. You can also follow their adventures on Instagram at @shazatsea.
