And now for something a little different…
Our friends at the Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach (https://www.coralseamarina.com), have put together a documentary series designed to educate and inspire boat owners looking to ‘Cruise the Whitsundays’ – whether for the very first time or on a return visit, or even for those who are just dreaming of visiting in the future but haven’t yet taken that first step.
We’re very proud to have collaborated with them on Episode 2 – A Local’s Guide, which incorporates footage from our YouTube Channel (The Sailing Adventures of Brilliant II https://www.youtube.com/@brilliantsailing) and an interview with yours truly.
We’ve been sailing these waters for decades now (on and off) and in fact, the Whitsundays was the very first place I (Sharon) set sail from as a young British backpacker in 1997.
Although we’ve sailed to many other destinations since then, the lure of the Whitsundays was strong enough to pull us back here 15 years ago as the place we’ve raised our son in and made our home base.
Despite the fact we’re now busy preparing our boat for more far-flung adventures, the Whitsundays will always hold a special place in our hearts – we hope this video showcases why, and encourages other sailors to put it on their bucket-lists.

The Sailing Adventures of Brilliant II
Join the Smallwoods - Sharon, Julian, Josh, and Pepe (the Blue Burmese) - aboard Sailing Vessel Brilliant II. Brilliant II is a Kelly Peterson 44, built in 1978. Julian and Sharon bought the boat in Phuket, Thailand, in 2005, and sailed her slowly back to Sydney, Australia. Over the next five years they lived aboard and sailed the coasts of New South Wales and Queensland. They are currently based in the Whitsundays, Queensland, where Josh was born in 2010. In 2021 they began a refit of the water-damaged interior (which had needed doing since the start!), while continuing to sail on mini-adventures north and south of their home port. Sharon is a photojournalist by trade, but realising YouTube is a thing has started creating videos too. You can also follow their adventures on Instagram at @shazatsea.
