Fridge Benefits - How to totally transform a 45-year-old galley | Boat Refit Documentary Part 21

Want to know how to make – or re-make – boat fridge lids?
Need to replace a galley countertop?
Looking to modernise the interior of an old sailing yacht?
If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes’ then this video is for you!

The galley on our 1978 Peterson 44, ‘Brilliant II’ hasn’t strayed from its original format but is now barely recognisable from its ‘70’s style previous look, thanks mostly to the introduction of more modern materials like Corian and brushed stainless steel.

The stainless steel work is covered in another video (Link here: https://youtu.be/qlbRA8HhE4Y) but this one explains how we made the large, Corian countertop encasing the fridge lids, as well as how we re-made said fridge lids using closed-cell foam and fibreglass. There’s also a bunch of other tips and tricks anyone attempting an interior refit might find useful.

We’d like to thank the teams at Gangemi Cabinet Makers (https://gangemicabinetmakers.com.au) and Hawkes Boatyard (https://hawkesboatyard.com) for their advice and assistance with materials supply.

Happy boat work and enjoy!

Pardey Time at the Whitsunday Sailing Club!

As soon I discovered that the inimitable Lin Pardey would be sharing her story at our local Whitsunday Sailing Club, the first thing I did was ensure my whole family and I were booked in. Like many cruising sailors, I'm a Pardey fan, so the chance to see...

What do you do when there’s no ‘off-the-shelf solution to a problem on your boat? Well, if you’re anything like us, you design and build one yourself! For years, we’ve been dragging around a portable Waeco/Dometic fridge-freezer as an extension t...

FUEL FOR THOUGHT: How to Remove, Fix, and Re-install an Auxiliary Fuel Tank (The Hobbit Hole Part 1)

After spending an unexpected and extended amount of time fixing the hull-to-deck join, bulwark, scuppers and caprail, it’s been nice to move back inside Brilliant II to continue the interior refit. Next on the list has been our “Hobbit Hole”, or as...

Toe-tally Brilliant!! How to Restore the Cap-Rail on a 45-Year-Old Monohull

We did it!! Well almost… The final piece of our hull-to-deck-join puzzle was the teak toe-rail, which, like everything else about this job, needed a drastic fix in order to ‘cap’ it off (pun intended). When we initially removed the rail from the...

We’ve Been Scuppered! How to Fix Damaged Bulwarks, Scuppers, and Deck Gear Attachment Points

In the words of the inimitable Lady Gaga: “Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger”. Or as we Brits would say: “In for a penny, in for a pound”. Both of these sayings refer to that place you go, when you’re so far down a particular rabbi...
