Sailing with a broken wrist
Finn had three goals when we returned to NZ: To row, to row and to row. The season is well and truly in full swing, with the premier competition, Maadi cup – the national schools rowing champs, just around the corner. This is what the teams train for, this is where the wheat is sorted from the chaff. This is not the time for taking up new hobbies like skateboarding or sky diving. That is unless you are Finn Hamill and your head’s in the clouds.
Therefore, imagine our surprise when Finn phoned us six days before Maadi to tell us his skateboarding news. He had fractured his wrist when a trick he was practicing went wrong. Trick? Skateboard? These are not words I have ever associated with Finn.
Rest, comfrey poultices and a belief in himself saw Finn back on the water five days after his fracture testing the arm to see if he could still compete.
It’s about now that you are probably thinking what the? Don’t let him row. We sat down and talked it through. For Finn’s mental health we let him have a go. In truth no one thought he would get beyond the trial. But as you will see, he went a lot further than anyone expected.
Nothing ventured nothing gained. You might fail if you do something, but you are doomed if you don’t even try.
In other news, Rob catches a trout with his bare hands!
