The second half of the passage from Indonesia to Cocos (Keeling) Islands was another unforgettable chapter of my solo ocean sailing journey.
Out in the Indian Ocean, far from land, things started to go wrong. The feeder of my mainsail track broke loose, making handling the sail more challenging. Then I lost the ability to receive emails, cutting me off from important communication. And when I finally arrived at Cocos Keeling, my Raymarine chartplotter and autopilot stopped working.
This is the reality of long-distance solo sailing. It is not only about beautiful sunsets, empty oceans, and freedom — it is also about staying calm, solving problems, and trusting your experience when things don't go according to plan.
In this episode, I share what happened during this challenging passage and how I dealt with unexpected failures while sailing alone across the Indian Ocean.
