In October 2020, I bought my Grinde — but the story began when I was eighteen, sailing this Danish 27-footer across the IJsselmeer.
Designed in 1976 by Peter Bruun, the Grinde is wide for her length, solidly built, and carries deep ballast. She isn’t sleek or fashionable. She’s built like a whale — full, steady, powerful.
When the dream of sailing around the world began to take shape, one question kept returning:
Can I really do this in a 27-foot boat?
Instead of figuring it out alone, I organized a Grinde weekend in Enkhuizen. Owners sailed in from across the Netherlands. We compared boats, shared modifications, talked about heavy weather, ballast, rigging, and offshore experience.
What started as a small gathering is now a growing annual meetup — a place where knowledge and stories are exchanged openly.
Standing there, surrounded by these boats, I realized something important:
The real limit is rarely the boat. It’s what we believe about the boat.
Looking back to this video, I fall in love all over again with this beautiful boat.
