Salon TRANSFORMATION 🤯….BUT…. (Aluminum Catamaran Build Pt. 91)

Brian and Karin of Sailing SV Delos advance the interior build of their custom 53ft aluminum catamaran Delos 2.0 in Auckland, fitting salon ceiling panels, testing LED lighting, and selecting settee fabrics.

Inside an Auckland boatyard in New Zealand, the custom 53-foot aluminum expedition catamaran Delos 2.0 has crossed a defining milestone in its multi-year construction journey. For Brian Trautman and Karin (Kazza) of Sailing SV Delos, the bridge deck salon is finally transitioning away from an industrial construction zone of bare aluminum ribs, temporary staging, and exposed wiring harnesses into a warm, functional maritime living space.

While previous phases centered on heavy structural welding, engine alignment, and electrical conduit routing, this phase brings the meticulous craftsmanship of yacht joinery and interior ergonomics to the forefront. Balancing durability against weight and livability, the crew must resolve intricate ceiling panel alignments, custom LED illumination angles, and the critical selection of salon settee upholstery materials engineered to withstand global bluewater voyaging.

Fitting and Aligning the Overhead Ceiling Panels

Overhead cabinetry and ceiling panel installations in an aluminum catamaran present unique engineering tolerances due to hull flex and thermal contraction. Working alongside finish specialist Michael, the Delos 2.0 build team tackled the precision fitting of the upholstered headliner panels spanning the broad salon roof. Each panel required exacting millimeter-level adjustments to ensure seam lines ran straight across the full beam without binding or sagging.

Michael demonstrated a tailored adjustment method using pneumatic staples and subtle backing shims to relieve localized tension. Where minor alignment gaps emerged against the compound curves of the salon coachroof, repositioning the fastening points allowed the panels to pull flat and uniform. Once dry-fitted and checked for seamless transitions, the team lowered the panels to integrate the recessed 12-volt LED downlights, solder each electrical connection, heat-shrink the wire splices, and lock the assemblies permanently into their structural ceiling battens.

Evaluating Ambient Lighting and Reflection Angles

Interior illumination on an offshore voyaging catamaran demands careful balancing between task lighting and night vision preservation. In the salon of Delos 2.0, Brian and Karin conducted live optical tests to determine the optimal orientation of recessed perimeter LED light channels. Because the salon features expansive panoramic windows offering 360-degree visibility, artificial light reflection against the window glazing and sole boards is a significant navigational and comfort consideration.

To evaluate the real-world effect, Karin paired the light channels with actual flooring samples to observe how lumens bounced off the horizontal grain. The team compared downward-facing direct illumination against indirect upward-deflected bounce lighting:

  • Direct Downward Lighting: Delivers clean, high-intensity task illumination across the dining settee and galley work surfaces, reducing shadows when cooking or reading charts.
  • Indirect Bounce Illumination: Creates a softer, diffused ambiance suited for evening relaxation, but risks creating localized glare spots on polished surfaces and window acrylic.

The tests confirmed that directing the LED fixtures downward through frosted diffusers produced the cleanest, most practical light distribution while minimizing unwanted exterior reflection during nocturnal passages.

The Salon Settee Fabric Selection Dilemma

Dubbed by shipyard colleagues as the project’s “Minister of Design,” Karin faced one of the most critical aesthetic and practical choices of the entire interior: selecting the upholstery material and color palette for the expansive central salon couch. On an expedition yacht destined for equatorial heat and high-latitude cold, settee fabrics must resist saltwater exposure, ultraviolet degradation, and mechanical abrasion from wet foul-weather gear.

Karin evaluated a broad spectrum of marine-grade textiles, weighing the tactile comfort of breathable woven fabrics against the wipe-clean impermeability of marine vinyl and synthetic leathers. Reviewing swatches within the brightly lit salon structure, the strategy centered on choosing warm, calm neutral base tones—such as soft oatmeal, sand, or warm grey—that keep the interior airy and expansive without showing ambient dirt. Vibrant accents and personalized touches will then be layered in through interchangeable throw pillows and washable cushion wraps.

Hull Bilge Wiring and Subsystem Routing

While joinery progressed in the main salon, crew member Bill continued technical installations deep in the lower hull compartments of Delos 2.0. Threading main DC distribution trunks and sensor wiring through aluminum conduit runs requires maneuvering through tight bilge spaces and working around structural transverse frames.

Navigating the ergonomic challenges of under-deck wiring runs—humorously labeled as “OSHA-approved working positions”—Bill organized and secured heavy-gauge battery cables, bilge pump wiring harnesses, and tank monitoring sensor leads. Isolating electrical wiring from direct contact with raw aluminum structure using marine grommets and closed-cell chafe protection remains vital to avoid galvanic corrosion and ensure electrical reliability across tens of thousands of ocean miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Delos 2.0 currently being constructed?

Delos 2.0 is being built at a specialized boatyard in Auckland, New Zealand, a premier destination for custom aluminum naval architecture and marine trades.

How were the salon overhead ceiling panels fitted without gaps?

Finish specialist Michael and the crew dry-fitted each panel, adjusting fastener positions and using subtle shims to eliminate compound-curve tension before wiring and final mounting.

Why did Brian and Karin test lighting orientation with flooring samples?

They evaluated direct downward lighting against indirect ceiling reflection using actual floorboard samples to verify light dispersion and prevent nighttime glare on the salon panoramic windows.

What upholstery strategy is Karin using for the main settee?

Karin selected warm neutral base tones for the primary settee upholstery to ensure longevity and cleanliness in high-wear conditions, planning to introduce color through interchangeable accents.

This week's episode is another huuuuge milestone that feels pretty unreal. The salon is really passing the tipping point from construction site vibes to holy cow this is actually where we're going to live 🤯 We're starting to be able to picture a cozy night on anchor cooking up some fresh caught fish in the galley, Kazza sipping a cup of tea curled up on the couch, Sierra doing her homeschooling at the table while we're sailing to our next destination. The transformation of the salon is huge in this one, and the vision is becoming clearer and clearer...The roof panels are going in as well as some super cool strip lighting that totally changes the feel of the space. BUT there's still one part of the salon that's still a bit fuzzy in our minds, and that's what we need YOUR help with!!!
