Tag along as the temperatures rise and the crew decides to ditch SV CUBA for the day to escape the heat. We are on the hunt for a special place in Kalamaris, home to wetland creatures and amphibians.

We are still sailing Greece and have now arrived and anchored in Pylos. Today we prepare ourselves to skip boat life and go for a land adventure instead. When you are living on a sailboat sometimes you just want to stretch your legs and we have now been sailing the Greek Islands almost non-stop for the past few weeks. Just island hopping and cruising where the wind takes us.

Though we tend to move around a lot on the boat while we are at sea, sometimes we are looking for a change of scenery and while being at anchor it is nice to take some time to explore the new surroundings by foot.

We take a dinghy ride across the bay, tie up on the town quay, and to Enrique’s delight, we accidentally walk right into the town’s street food districts. So, we start off with some cool treats before leaving Gialova, for the 8 km hike into the hillside. It’s the peak of the summer and the town center is not the only place to find treats and soon our hike turns into a treasure hunt. We are on a mission to “rescue” more goodies along the way. Heavily loaded we finally make the last stretch of the hike through some thick greenery as we catch a first glimpse of the reason, we walked for 3 hours.

The narrow path that leads to this breath-taking place opens up a view of the waterfall that could have derived right out of one of Bob Ross’ paintings.

If you are looking to visit Kalamaris Waterfall, you can get there from the village of Gialova by car or by foot following the signs for Kalamaris waterfall. After around a kilometer you should take a turn to the right to enter a dirt road. The sign for the waterfall will however only be written in Greek from here onwards. The path will take you through orchards covering the bottom of the valley until you see a sign indicating a car park. You will find a small area that allows a few cars to park between the olive trees.

From here you will have to leave your car behind and follow a narrow path that merges into the thick jungle-like greenery for about 15 minutes until you will find some wooden steps that lead up to the waterfall. You will find a small pool with refreshing water and the rock right in front of the waterfall will make a great photo spot. Usually, this waterfall is not very crowded and it is a fantastic place for the whole family to spend the day away from direct sunshine and the relentless heat.

If you like to receive more information about this place or Pylos in general, please just leave us a comment 😊

We are Enrique (Kiki) from Cuba and Sarah (Salsa) from Germany, a sailing couple. We are living on a boat, our tiny house, creating a travel vlog as we sail around the world. We have almost zero sailing experience, but are determined to circumnavigate & share our adventures with you.

We are by no means film makers or video editors so please let us know what you think about our videos, what you like to see more of – or less 😉

Sailing life can be a real challenge and a bit scary at times (especially when your home dangles from an iron thread just 10 mm thick). What is to come? We don’t know but day by day we are learning how to live more sustainable, living off grid, more connected to nature, so we can share our adventures with you. Come storm or good weather.
