The Forgotten South Seas Paradise Makatea – EP 166 Sailing Seatramp

After 6 months on the paradisiacal atolls of the Tuamotus, French Polynesia, we are heading towards Tahiti. However, there is still one island that interests us insanely. Makatea. Millions of years ago also an atoll, the island was pushed up and today impresses with spectacular natural paradise.

Surrounded by white cliffs and breathtaking beauty, inland like a moonscape, the island was already abandoned in the 60s. Formerly a vibrant working island, specializing in the mining of phospate, the island was cleared for planned nuclear testing and left to its own devices.

Parts of the machines and tools can still be found today and are being reclaimed by nature.

Today, attempts are being made to make the island an ecotourism destination and to use the beautiful cliffs for rock climbing. Again and again the talks start to restart the phospate mining, but thank God the little paradise in the middle of the South Seas so far successfully resists.
