Ep. 128 ~ Filmed in June 2023, in this episode, we set sail across the Aegean Sea, journeying from the Greek island of Lesvos to the remote Sporades islands on our full-time floating home—a catamaran. This 2-day crossing covers roughly 45 nautical miles each day, as we navigate through some of the Aegean’s lighter northerly winds, funneled down from the Black Sea through the Sea of Marmara. With meltemi season just around the corner, we have chosen our weather window carefully, seeking enough wind to keep us sailing but not so much to make the passage dangerous.
Since we’ll be completely off-grid during this leg of the journey, (no internet) we prepared by studying weather forecasts in detail, hoping for stable conditions throughout the trip. Early June is a perfect time to be out here, and as we were arriving to our first stop on the quiet island of Agios Efstratios, we were welcomed by a spectacular sight—a massive pod of dolphins who joined us for over 10 minutes, playing alongside our catamaran!
Our first stop in the Sporades is the pristine island of Kyra Panagia, where we dropped anchor in a peaceful cove with crystal-clear blue water, right in Zone A of the Alonissos Marine Park—a true paradise for sailors and sea life alike.
