Before casting off lines and officially clearing out of Turkish waters, Australian voyagers Chris and Joanne paused their cruising schedule aboard Sailing No Regrets for an ambitious overland trek. Leaving their catamaran securely tied at Oasis Marina on the Çeşme peninsula, the pair joined travel companions Pete and Sandy to catch a domestic flight east into the surreal, volcanic heart of Central Anatolia: Cappadocia.
Cruising sailors often spend months focused squarely on anchorages, tide tables, and hull maintenance, making a fast transition into high, arid desert valleys a striking change of pace. Stepping out of their transfer shuttle into the village of Göreme, a brisk climb behind their quarters opened onto a panoramic ridge. Below stretched an ancient landscape sculpted out of volcanic tuff, previewing days of exploring cliff-hewn settlements before pointing their bows toward the Greek Aegean.
The inland itinerary commenced at the Göreme Open-Air Museum, where early Christian monastic communities began carving sanctuaries directly into soft consolidated volcanic ash during the fourth century. Navigating winding paths through the canyon, the crew stepped inside secluded chapels, dining refectories, and vaulted living quarters. Intricate Byzantine frescoes depicting the life of Christ and biblical scenes remain remarkably vibrant across the rock surfaces, having survived centuries of weathering and isolation.
A short transit brought the group to Uçhisar Castle, Cappadocia’s most commanding landmark. Far from a conventional fortress built of masonry blocks, Uçhisar is a monolithic volcanic outcrop hollowed out into a vertical warren of chambers, defensive tunnels, and provision stores. Climbing up stone corridors polished smooth by generations of foot traffic, Chris and Jo reached the ramparts, taking in sweeping 360-degree views across the wind-etched valleys and distant mountain ranges.
Pushing further along the valley floor, the team inspected the deserted settlement of Zelve Open-Air Museum. Unlike dedicated monastic compounds, Zelve functioned as an active cave village where Christians and Muslims lived side by side in rock-hewn homes, churches, and a cliff-carved mosque until erosion prompted their relocation in the mid-twentieth century. The day ended overlooking Love Valley, where centuries of relentless wind and runoff have sculpted towering stone pillars and slender fairy chimneys into dramatic spires.
The second day of exploring Anatolia took a claustrophobic turn downward into Derinkuyu Underground City. Extending multiple subterranean stories into the solid rock, Derinkuyu served as an impregnable underground refuge capable of sheltering thousands of inhabitants alongside livestock, wine presses, and grain stores during invasions. Ducking through narrow connecting tunnels and steep stone stairways, the crew experienced firsthand the austere, fortified reality endured by ancient communities hiding beneath the earth.
Returning above ground, the crew traveled south to Ihlara Valley, an unexpected canyon oasis slicing through the arid plains. Flanked by vertical red cliffs, the Melendiz River creates a lush riparian green corridor on the canyon floor. Following the riverbank trail, Chris, Jo, Pete, and Sandy discovered ancient chapels cut directly into sheer rock faces, their weathered frescoes echoing the devotional history of the gorge.
Exiting the gorge proved to be an athletic undertaking, requiring a relentless ascent up 420 steep stone steps that tested everyone’s legs. At the canyon’s northern mouth stood Selime Cathedral, a colossal rock-cut monastery complex dominating a craggy volcanic promontory. Scrambling through vaulted monastic basilicas, cavernous kitchens, and monk quarters carved into the mountain wall, the crew marveled at the staggering scale of stone excavation completed over a thousand years ago.
No overland passage through Cappadocia is complete without taking to the sky. Rising well before dawn in biting morning temperatures, the crew reached the launch field just as ground teams brought powerful industrial fans to life, filling massive nylon envelopes with cold air. Soon, propane burners roared into the dark, lighting up the valley floor in bursts of orange flame as balloon after balloon stood upright.
Climbing into the wicker basket, the liftoff was near instantaneous and remarkably gentle. With only intermittent bursts from the burners breaking the morning silence, the balloon ascended into the dawn sky surrounded by dozens of vibrant envelopes drifting above the contours of Göreme. The crew was treated to an extraordinary perspective of the sculpted terrain as the early sun began illuminating ridge crests and casting long shadows across the valleys below.
The pilot displayed exceptional airmanship, dropping the basket down between fairy chimneys to skim just above fruit orchards before gently lifting back up over sheer canyon walls. Nearing touchdown, the balloon floated so low over spectators gathered on the valley roads that people reached out with cups of coffee, culminating in a soft, textbook landing that brought their Anatolian detour to a celebratory close.
Returning to the Turkish coast, Chris and Jo rejoined their catamaran at Oasis Marina, where summer realities in the Mediterranean immediately asserted themselves. Across the hills framing the harbor, a raging brushfire sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky. From the cockpit of No Regrets, the crew watched firefighting helicopters work in continuous rotation, dipping their Bambi buckets straight into the sea before climbing back up to drop water on the advancing blaze.
With the fire a safe distance away, the crew motored around to Çeşme to complete their formal departure formalities. To avoid bureaucratic delays, they engaged a local clearing agent who took their ship’s papers and handled the harbor master and passport control in minutes, leaving the crew ready to cast off. After completing exit protocols, No Regrets pointed her bows westward across the Chios Strait toward Greece.
The open-water crossing between Çeşme and the Greek island of Chios spans a mere 7 nautical miles, but navigating the narrow channel required careful vigilance. A fleet of commercial fishing vessels was working in a tight defensive line across the passage, towing heavy nets that forced the catamaran to weave around their gear before picking up the harbor breakwater of Chios Port.
Stepping ashore at Chios, Chris and Jo decided to attempt clearing into Greece independently to avoid paying local agency fees. The effort was short-lived. Greek port authorities presented them with an administrative manual spanning nearly 100 pages outlining the complex procedures required to issue a private cruising transit log. Conceding defeat, they were ushered out the side door and walked back to a maritime agent, who quickly stamped and verified their transit log without further delay.
Paperwork finally secured, No Regrets cleared Chios harbor and turned south toward Samos. A clean, steady breeze developed directly astern, providing textbook conditions for a downwind catamaran run. Hoisting their bright asymmetric spinnaker, the crew cut their engines as the sail filled out in the Aegean breeze, sending the multihull gliding effortlessly across the blue water.
Arriving off the southwestern coast of Samos, the sheer mass of Mount Kerkis dominated the horizon. Rising 1,434 meters (4,705 feet) straight out of the Aegean Sea, the mountain dwarfed the catamaran as they eased into a secluded anchorage. A quick drone flight highlighted the dramatic contrast between the clear turquoise shallows and the precipitous rocky slopes towering overhead. Taking the tender ashore to a rustic seaside taverna on the pebble beach, the crew celebrated a seamless transition from the caves of Cappadocia to their favorite realm: cruising the Greek Islands.

With their Seawind catamaran No Regrets safely berthed at Oasis Marina on Turkey’s Çeşme peninsula, Chris and Jo seized an operational weather window to travel inland with visiting friends Pete and Sandy, exploring Cappadocia’s subterranean cities and geological wonders before clearing out of Turkish waters.
The crew toured the Göreme Open-Air Museum’s 4th-century rock-cut monastic churches, the perforated volcanic citadel of Uçhisar Castle, the cliff-hewn dwellings and mosque of Zelve Open-Air Museum, the multi-tiered underground refuge of Derinkuyu, and the riverside canyon churches and Selime Cathedral along Ihlara Valley.
Launching before sunrise after ground crews inflated the envelopes using cold-air fans and propane burners, the crew drifted across Cappadocia’s valleys in near silence. Their pilot guided the basket down between fairy chimneys and along canyon bluffs before executing a precise low-level landing beside spectator crowds.
As they prepared to depart Oasis Marina near Çeşme, the crew watched firefighting helicopters repeatedly scooping water from the Aegean Sea with Bambi buckets to battle a severe summer wildfire burning across the arid hillsides along the Turkish coast.
Attempting an independent clearance at the Port of Chios to avoid agency fees, Chris and Jo were directed to an exhaustive 100-page regulatory administrative procedure for processing Greek transit logs. Realizing the bureaucratic complexity would stall their voyage, they engaged a local maritime agent to complete the paperwork.
After an exhilarating downwind run under spinnaker from Chios across the Aegean Sea, No Regrets dropped anchor in crystal-clear waters directly beneath Mount Kerkis on Samos, an imposing 1,434-meter (4,705-foot) peak that dominates the island’s rugged southwestern coast.

WHO ARE WE?
Hey there! We’re Chris and Jo, an ordinary Aussie couple living our extraordinary dream of exploring the world by boat!
Our sailing adventure began in January 2019 aboard our Seawind 1260 catamaran, No Regrets. We explored Australia’s east coast before sailing to beautiful New Caledonia. Over the following years, we continued north, eventually circumnavigating Australia in 2021 and 2022 and discovering some truly incredible places along the way.
In 2024, we began the next chapter of our adventure aboard our new Seawind 1370, No Regrets II, taking our sailing journey beyond Australia and into the wider world.
We weren’t always sailors. Having previously owned fishing and water-skiing boats, our passion for sailing grew after crewing in South Australia. Before long, we’d taken the leap into full-time life on the water!
Through our channel, Sailing No Regrets, we share the highs, challenges and unforgettable moments of life aboard a cruising catamaran — from remote anchorages and amazing destinations to the realities of sailing long distances and exploring new countries.
We were inspired by other YouTube sailing channels to chase our own dream, and we hope our adventures might inspire you to follow yours, whatever that may be.
So come along for the ride! If you enjoy our videos, don't forget to like, comment and subscribe. We'd love to have you join us on our journey.
