E113 - A Breakdown Going Through The Rip, Port Fairy, Apollo Bay to Port Phillip Bay
We leave Portland and have a very flat motor sail to the lovely seaside town of Port Fairy, before round Cape Otway and into Apollo Bay where a grumpy seal decides to rest on our marina finger. Our arrival into Port Phillip Bay is timed perfectly, however Laylah suffers an engine failure at the worst possible time just as we prepare to enter the Rip. Because of large tidal flows through the relatively narrow channel from the bay to the ocean, and a high rocky seabed, it's proximity to active shipping lanes, the Rip is a dangerous stretch of water and has claimed numerous ships and many lives. With a 2 police boat escort, we both safely sail through and No Regrets tows Laylah to a mooring at Sorento.
WHO ARE WE?
We’re Chris and Jo and we have been living on our Seawind 1260 since January 2019. In our first year we bring our yacht down the east coast of Australia and sail it out to New Caledonia. After cruising further north up the east coast of Australia in 2020, we decide to circumnavigate Australia during 2021 and 2022. We had previously owned fishing and water skiing boats, but after a couple years crewing in South Australia we decided to jump right in and make a sea change.
We are just an ordinary Aussie couple exploring what this great world has to offer and hope that we can inspire others just as we were by watching other YouTube channels to follow our dreams.
