Five days into the passage, roughly 800 miles sailed, we are roughly around the halfway mark. This passage has been a very different strategy to the sailing we done down south.
Crossing from four degrees south to five degrees north, that’s around 1,500 miles right through the doldrums. Light and unpredictable winds, plenty of squalls, and the potential for some heavy localised thunderstorms, it demanded a different game plan to get across the equator and into the northern Atlantic Ocean
With the Cape Index reading low, the conditions were about as favourable as we could hope for without getting hammered by the worst of the weather. Whilst you can’t complain when the ocean looks like this. But With a pregnant partner, and still a long way to go, we have been relying heavily on the engine.
And calm weather brings plenty of time to contemplate about how much diesel we have and how far we can motor with what we have...
