After a trying 9-day passage from Nicaragua, it is time for Gargoyle to check-in to the Galapagos Islands. The requirements for entry are legendary amongst cruisers, especially the need to have a pristine hull inspection. Fail the inspection and you must go 40nm offshore and have it cleaned again at a cost of $300. After getting successfully checked in, we begin our exploration of the island with a tour of a giant tortoise breeding center and then visit a local beach where the sea lions are not thrilled to see us. Through it all, we are amazed at how deserted it is here. We are surrounded at anchorage by idled luxury yachts that charter for up to $160,000/week. In addition, at our anchorage Dean gets a chance to defend his boat from the invading sea lions in an epic battle on the stern. We also fuel up Gargoyle from jerry cans as San Cristobal is the only island where yachts can take on fuel. Finally, we work with local tour operator Cindy to find a tour we can afford, and she seems just as excited at the prospect of seeing 3 kinds of boobies as we are!
