Banter, Injuries and Mistakes - Ceiling Panel Fabrication -- Episode 169

This week we are erasing the last big scar that our boat received from her previous life. Having ceiling panels will bring her interior back from the depths and help her look like a proper yacht.... and a home. Of course we can't get the project done without the typical banter, injuries and mistakes!

DIY Yacht Refit: Replacing Tattered Ceiling Panels in Salon & Galley

The Sailing Dauntless crew is at it again, tackling a new boat refit challenge on their adventures. This time, they take on the project of replacing the tattered ceiling panels in their yacht’s salon and galley areas. In this episode, Sid, Kim, Ty, Maddie, and Stella share all the secrets to installing vinyl, snaps, and Velcro for an amazing renovation upgrade.

Episode Highlights

  • Preparation phase with all necessary materials and tools ready
  • Making templates of the damaged ceiling panels from the original ones
  • Cutting, trimming, and assembling the new vinyl panels
  • Using contact cement or Super 77 to adhere vinyl to panels properly
  • Tai suffering a nasty injury requiring immediate first aid by Mike, Sydney’s fiance who is a firefighter
  • 3D printing required tools for snaps and fastening

The Learning Curve – Mistakes and Fixes

The team faced a few hiccups during this project. Their biggest issue was with the largest panel, which ended up with some wrinkles due to an inexperienced application technique. This mistake cost $30 worth of material that had to be redone. However, with perseverance and innovative thinking (involving using the 3D printer), they successfully rectified their errors.

The Finishing Touches

With the mistakes fixed, the final result was astonishing. The yacht now had a completely revamped look with elegant new ceiling panels in both the salon and galley areas, reminiscent of how boats should be – sophisticated and chic.

Celebrating Success

Sid, feeling elated with their achievement, couldn’t help but express excitement. For them, this was not just about beautifying the boat, it was a step towards fulfilling their adventure goals – to die with memories, not dreams, and live dauntless!
