Welcome to Out Chasing Stars! We're Admiral Amy and Captain David and we're currently exploring the world on s/v Starry Horizons, our Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 catamaran. We started out (nervously!) watching our boat get launched in La Rochelle, France in October of 2014. Since then we've completed an entire world circumnavigation, sailing over 37,000nm, and documented it all here on YouTube. We started making these videos to show our family and friends what life was like on a sailboat, and we're still amazed that other people have also started following along. While we sailed across the Pacific, we heard about the Niue Whale Research Project. They were looking for volunteer boats to assist in their observations of humpback whales off the coast of Niue and we immediately knew we wanted to volunteer. Unfortunately for us (but fortunately for them!) the word had spread so well that they had an abundance of volunteers and only ended up needing Starry Horizons for one day.
Most of the volunteer boats were monohulls, so they took advantage of having a catamaran to invite local students out for a day on the water. It was a lot of fun learning more about humpbacks, including what researchers do to track the whales, but the best part of the whole day was being serenaded by a few of the whales we followed!
