Unveiling Paradise: Holly and Ray’s Journey Through French Polynesia

Last week, you watched us hang out with the locals both above and below the water line. This week, join us as we enjoy a sunny day on a beautiful secluded beach in French Polynesia.

Embarking on a Sailing Adventure

To put it briefly, my partner Ray and I have sailed across various regions including the East Coast of the United States, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Now, we find ourselves on another incredible leg of our journey – navigating the Pacific Ocean and exploring French Polynesia.

An Unforgettable Exploration

Despite facing harsh weather conditions for a solid ten days prior, luck was on our side when we experienced clear skies, sunshine, and gentle winds. Armed with an enthusiastic spirit, we packed up our hoolie to create a cozy spot for a picnic, while Ray hung some laundry out to dry.

It didn’t take long for the local fish, known as krabbies, to show their disapproval of our presence on their home turf. Despite their protests, we secured our ideal location, set up a temporary shelter, and lounged under swaying palm trees.

A Hidden World

These enchanting atolls were formed when volcanic eruptions eroded away and left behind barrier reefs with accumulated debris. The formation resulted in mesmerizing lagoons, surrounded by vibrant greenery on one side while displaying a starkly contrasting barren landscape on the other.

Adventurous Ray discovered what seemed like potential treasure buried in shallow waters but faced the challenge of retrieving it with flip-flops as footwear. Despite his initial efforts, the excitement continued when he stumbled upon an elusive eel hiding beneath the waves!

A Productive Day

With a sense of purpose and determination, we engaged in essential boat maintenance, such as running our water maker, repairing exhaust elbows using JB Weld, and securing crucial items to aid future sailing adventures.

A Relaxing Conclusion

As clouds returned and threatened to disrupt the perfect ambiance, we decided to utilize a favorable weather window. The next day, we would sail up to another atoll in French Polynesia.

We enjoyed every last moment of tranquility on this slice of paradise before returning our attention to preparing for departure.

We built the perfect anchor alarm system🚨 Here is how we use it

When we arrived at the anchorage, Holly handled the windlass while I talked through how we set the anchor. We’ve also got the anchor alarm running on a split screen, so you can see it working in real time, including when the alarms go off. The anchor watch is a custom Home Assistant setup that take...

Two things have really changed the way we live at anchor this season. The first is our custom anchor alarm, which means we can both sleep easier at night. The second is the new shade over the bow. Together, they give us more comfort and peace of mind while living at anchor. When we arrived at the ...

Our worst nightmare happened and we weren’t as prepared as we thought.

Between the two of us, we’ve been sailing for a long time. We know the theory. We know where every piece of distress equipment on this boat is. We don’t skimp on insurance policies. But when an emergency actually happened, none of that seemed to matter. What we had was a pounding heart, a serious ...

The Emergency We Weren’t Ready For

Between the two of us, we’ve been sailing for a long time. We know the theory. We know what a MAYDAY call sounds like. We know where every piece of distress equipment on this boat lives. What was your first serious boating-related injury, and did you struggle mentally afterward?🤕

I’m surprised by how difficult the emotional part of my recovery has been. Even though I’m back on the boat, one month later, I can’t seem to shake the bad dreams and catch myself hesitating over movements that used to feel completely natural. I’m determined to rebuild my confidence and get back to...
