There are many polarbears spread out all over Svalbard. They may look cute, but polar bears are the most aggressive and ruthless of the bear species. You don’t want them anywhere near you.
The Svalbard authorities therefore demands you carry a way to scare them off in an early stage. The blast from either a rifle or signal gun will make sure of that. The first blast will either scare them away, or spark their interest. The second blast will for sure keep them away. If a third blast is needed, you are too close.
Law(and common sense) says it’s your own responsibility to keep at least 500 meters away. If they come closer, you move away.
Anyway, I really hope to spot a polar bear! I feel very confident I will during this trip!🙌
