When Stern Tying Goes Wrong: We Tangled Our Line And Lost One Engine

Ep. 129 ~ In today’s episode, filmed in June 2023, we’re stern tying our catamaran home to rocks by ourselves for the first time—and it’s not exactly smooth sailing! Join us as we dodge disaster on the stunning Greek island of Alonissos in the charming little harbor of Votsi. With its crystal blue-green water and rows of colorful fishing boats, Votsi looks like the perfect spot to anchor... but things take a turn when we realize this might be a bigger challenge than we bargained for.

We had a slight difference of opinion on how to handle the stern tying procedures, and Donovan reluctantly agreed to try it my way. Big mistake! A floating line, a propeller mishap, and one stressed-out catamaran crew later, we’re scrambling to keep our boat safe in close quarters with the wind pushing us toward rocks and boats around us. For over 20 minutes Donovan has to dive in and out of water to untangle the line, while I navigate a chaotic scene with only one engine working! Spoiler alert: we decided that stern tying to rocks is not on the agenda again until we have a much, much better plan in hand. 😅

After that chaos, we head to Skopelos, where we finally catch a breather. From rookie mistakes to valuable lessons learned, this episode is a wild ride through the ups and downs of life aboard our catamaran.
