Sailing the boat backwards can be very useful. If it’s windy you can just put the boat head to wind and then use the rudders in reverse but be careful - they are extremely twitchy when going astern!

The mainsail area of a Hobie 16 is just under 14m2, unfortunately I couldn’t find any information regarding the reefed sail area. My best guess is that it is reduced by around 5m2 leaving you with 9m2 on the main.
