Earns his Swiss offshore sailing license and refits his boat. Then sails alone from the south of France along the Spanish coast to Tangiers Morocco. On to the Canary Islands where he learned how to manage in extreme ocean conditions. Continues south to the Cabo Verde Islands, land of the most beautiful people ever. He learns to speak the local Creole language so to better understand the Cape Verdean culture. To enjoy life, feel young and love again. He recovers from hip replacement surgery and sails on to the great African continent where few sailors dare to go. His story is one of an old geezer living the life of a full time sailor with all it’s perils and pleasures. So hang on, eat, dance, laugh, love and discover the world with him and his boat Galopin. Anchoring is always a different challenge. Conditions always vary, especially in Cape Verde. And in this case Tarrafal do Santiago. There was swell and many rocks below the surface and not much sand for the anchor to stick. But we managed, and thanks to a wonderful family of Pirates, we were able to go ashore a few days. We went to visit Praia, Cape Verde’s capital city. It’s not recommended to anchor in the bay of Praia. Even the police say it’s best to leave your boat in Tarrafal and go to the city by car. Which is what we did. A two hour ride across the entire island from North to South. The weather was amazing so the views of the dramatic landscape were spectacular. Once in Praia, we rented an apartment thanks to our friend Carlos in an upscale suburb of the city and visited the city’s center. Once again, Cape Verde never ceases to amaze me.
