Losing Water on a Boating Trip Across Delaware Bay
On a recent family trip across the Delaware Bay, we experienced quite the adventure. As morning dawned, the sun rising over the horizon in all its glory, everything was calm and peaceful.
The children were still asleep as I took a moment to enjoy the serene beauty of the bay at sunrise. Little did I know that the tranquility would be short-lived.
Realizing Our Water Supply is Depleting
A few hours into our journey, I noticed something wasn’t right with our water supply. The battery level had dropped drastically, down to 123 amp hours (and even lower at times), leaving us with barely any water left.
We realized that our existing DC bank, which we were unsure of its size and capacity, had reached its limit. The fridge, pump, and autopilot consuming power rapidly had drained what was once a substantial supply.
Investigating the Problem
A closer look revealed that the issue stemmed from our water pump, which had stopped working again. Despite Cory’s efforts to tighten the hose clamps, heat apparently caused them to loosen, ultimately leading to our last tank running dry.
With just 2 and a half liters of water left, we were left with no choice but to find a solution. It was time to make improvements to the connections aboard our vessel to prevent future occurrences of this nature.
Implementing Fixes
We decided to secure the hose clamps with zip ties, ensuring they wouldn’t come loose due to heat or other external factors. Cory was then set on replacing some of the plastic fittings found throughout the boat, which were contributing to frequent disconnections and failures.
Reliving the Harrowing Experience
A few days later, we reflected on this harrowing experience while anchoring in a picturesque spot along the Chesapeake Bay. We could appreciate our good fortune in having such perfect weather during our voyage.
The Ultimate Reward
In that moment, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the blessings in life. The family was safe and sound, facing challenges head-on, all while enjoying nature’s splendor surrounding us.
Overcoming Adversity Together
Though we encountered issues along the way, each challenge served to strengthen our resolve and bond as a family. And there’s nothing quite like sitting back in your anchored spot along Delaware Bay while enjoying an early sunset.
Lovely Sailing Memories
In the end, this boating adventure across Delaware Bay turned into an experience we’ll cherish forever. The unexpected hurdles only served to remind us of our strength as a family.
Next Adventure
The trip gave us renewed appreciation for the journey ahead – to the Bahamas and beyond. We can’t wait to see what other challenges and adventures lie in store for our family.
For now, we will savor this remarkable tale of overcoming adversity together while exploring our beautiful world by water!
An early start before sunrise helps us push on the Delaware Bay with the current. After some good sailing we lose our wind and fight current. And as we drop anchor we have a bit of a bad surprise. This forces us to leave later the following morning. But we make it through the C & D Canal to end up dropping anchor in a beautiful Beacon Bay on the Chesapeake. Filmed October 2023.
