On this episode we replace an escape hatch that could have sunk our boat! It comes from an issue with the escape hatches that have been know to detach from the sailboat hull, usually causing the boat to sink and we fixed it just in time!
We have know about this issue for a while now, and its something that has worried us considerably but also one that we have been quite unable to address until now. It requires us to be in one place long enough for the company to send the replacement hatches to, as well as that place big enough that the company in Europe can send them to. THEN, once we receive them, we have to EITHER haul the boat out of the water – what we wanted to do originally, but costs us nearly $1000- OR find a safe spot that is calm enough to complete the work safely from underneath the yacht.
It finally all came together in Mexico, we stopped sailing long enough to receive the hatches, and tied up to a nice marina in La Paz. Here the water was calm and conditions were good to complete this arduous task… but not all the stars lined up perfectly and it took us far more work than it should have to get this troublesome job complete. But after teaming up for a full day, busting some knuckles, calling some experts, and a little but of cursing, we finally got it removed and swapped out for the recalled replacement. FINALLY!
