To Hull & Back! How to Fix a Decimated Hull-to-Deck Join

Let’s just say, that when we started removing the sections of toe-rail around our genoa tracks (Video link here: ▶️ https://youtu.be/KOL_bHUZGv0?si=tq8QyKm0SoLY0CuH ), we opened a proverbial can of worms 🪱.

It was literally a case of “what lies beneath”, with the poor condition of our hull-to-deck join finally revealed.

There were cracks, corroded screws, and a timber core that wasn’t so much timber anymore as vegetable mulch! 🥴

It was with great trepidation that Julian ventured further from those problematic side-deck areas, finding more problems everywhere his hammer and chisel struck. 😵

This video is the story of what we found, and how we fixed it. It’s full to the brim of practical tips for anyone who finds themselves in the same, unfortunate situation as us – which could literally be anyone with a fibreglass boat and a timber toe-rail covering the hull-to-deck join.

On the bright side, this turned out to be the single biggest source of our interior leaks and consequent water damage, so fixing it – although a major job we hadn’t factored into the refit – was really a no-brainer and something that just had to be done.

Onwards and upwards as they say! ⛵️

Pardey Time at the Whitsunday Sailing Club!

As soon I discovered that the inimitable Lin Pardey would be sharing her story at our local Whitsunday Sailing Club, the first thing I did was ensure my whole family and I were booked in. Like many cruising sailors, I'm a Pardey fan, so the chance to see...

Toe-tally Brilliant!! How to Restore the Cap-Rail on a 45-Year-Old Monohull

We did it!! Well almost… The final piece of our hull-to-deck-join puzzle was the teak toe-rail, which, like everything else about this job, needed a drastic fix in order to ‘cap’ it off (pun intended). When we initially removed the rail from the...

We’ve Been Scuppered! How to Fix Damaged Bulwarks, Scuppers, and Deck Gear Attachment Points

In the words of the inimitable Lady Gaga: “Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger”. Or as we Brits would say: “In for a penny, in for a pound”. Both of these sayings refer to that place you go, when you’re so far down a particular rabbi...
