Sailing to a piece of paradise - Lady Musgrave Island - Australia's Great Barrier Reef

People often ask me why Lady Musgrave Island is one of my favourite locations on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
I have a long-held love for the place that stretches back to my backpacker days.
In 1997 I attempted to travel to the lagoon, but somehow landed in Gladstone after the transport options had moved to Bundaberg (thanks to an out-of-date guidebook!).
Seven years later, I finally sailed to the island with my soon-to-be husband, Julian.
We had arrived in a way that was far more meaningful than any day tour or ferry trip.
We had sailed there.
Lady Musgrave was the ultimate destination on a voyage from Sydney to the bottom of the Great Barrier Reef and back, on our little Compass 29, 'Orion'.
It was pure magic.
In 2006, I got to return to the island on our newly acquired, somewhat larger yacht, the Peterson 44, 'Brilliant II'.
We called in during our year-long voyage from Phuket, Thailand, to Sydney, Australia.
From 2007-9 we were based in Bundaberg, so many a long weekend was spent traversing the 120-mile round trip between Lady Musgrave and the Bundaberg Port Marina in Brilliant II.
The next 10 years were all about working, starting a family, and cruising the Whitsundays, but from December 2019-January 2020, we once again set sail for the southern Great Barrier Reef.
For me, the ensuing visit to Lady Musgrave was particularly special.
It was the first with my son, Josh.
This is a video from that trip.
The music is 'memories' by bensound.com.
Enjoy 💙

Pardey Time at the Whitsunday Sailing Club!

As soon I discovered that the inimitable Lin Pardey would be sharing her story at our local Whitsunday Sailing Club, the first thing I did was ensure my whole family and I were booked in. Like many cruising sailors, I'm a Pardey fan, so the chance to see...

FUEL FOR THOUGHT: How to Remove, Fix, and Re-install an Auxiliary Fuel Tank (The Hobbit Hole Part 1)

After spending an unexpected and extended amount of time fixing the hull-to-deck join, bulwark, scuppers and caprail, it’s been nice to move back inside Brilliant II to continue the interior refit. Next on the list has been our “Hobbit Hole”, or as...

Toe-tally Brilliant!! How to Restore the Cap-Rail on a 45-Year-Old Monohull

We did it!! Well almost… The final piece of our hull-to-deck-join puzzle was the teak toe-rail, which, like everything else about this job, needed a drastic fix in order to ‘cap’ it off (pun intended). When we initially removed the rail from the...

We’ve Been Scuppered! How to Fix Damaged Bulwarks, Scuppers, and Deck Gear Attachment Points

In the words of the inimitable Lady Gaga: “Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger”. Or as we Brits would say: “In for a penny, in for a pound”. Both of these sayings refer to that place you go, when you’re so far down a particular rabbi...
