Making Memories - Sailing to Meet a Guinness World Record Holder on the Great Barrier Reef

One of the best things about cruising as a family is spending quality time in some pretty awesome places with the ones you love.

As parents, we get so much joy from taking our son Josh to destinations we’ve sailed to previously and experiencing them again through his eyes.

Green Island in Far North Queensland is one of those places.

It’s somewhere Julian and I have been to countless times before (check out the slightly cringeworthy old photos from 00:25 in), as well as being an amazing place to sail to in its own right.

Green Island is Australia’s first protected coral cay, the Great Barrier Reef’s first tourist destination, site of the world’s first underwater observatory, and home to the world’s first (and only) crocodile exhibit on a sand cay.

The most famous resident of that exhibit – otherwise known as ‘Marineland Melanesia’ – is Cassius.

Now the world’s oldest known surviving crocodile, at a recently estimated 120 years old, Cassisus also holds the Guinness World Record for being the largest crocodile in captivity, measuring a whopping 5.48 metres (17ft 11in).

Come along and meet him with us, and welcome aboard for the ride!

Pardey Time at the Whitsunday Sailing Club!

As soon I discovered that the inimitable Lin Pardey would be sharing her story at our local Whitsunday Sailing Club, the first thing I did was ensure my whole family and I were booked in. Like many cruising sailors, I'm a Pardey fan, so the chance to see...

What do you do when there’s no ‘off-the-shelf solution to a problem on your boat? Well, if you’re anything like us, you design and build one yourself! For years, we’ve been dragging around a portable Waeco/Dometic fridge-freezer as an extension t...

FUEL FOR THOUGHT: How to Remove, Fix, and Re-install an Auxiliary Fuel Tank (The Hobbit Hole Part 1)

After spending an unexpected and extended amount of time fixing the hull-to-deck join, bulwark, scuppers and caprail, it’s been nice to move back inside Brilliant II to continue the interior refit. Next on the list has been our “Hobbit Hole”, or as...

Toe-tally Brilliant!! How to Restore the Cap-Rail on a 45-Year-Old Monohull

We did it!! Well almost… The final piece of our hull-to-deck-join puzzle was the teak toe-rail, which, like everything else about this job, needed a drastic fix in order to ‘cap’ it off (pun intended). When we initially removed the rail from the...

We’ve Been Scuppered! How to Fix Damaged Bulwarks, Scuppers, and Deck Gear Attachment Points

In the words of the inimitable Lady Gaga: “Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger”. Or as we Brits would say: “In for a penny, in for a pound”. Both of these sayings refer to that place you go, when you’re so far down a particular rabbi...
