CAY-TRIPPING! Sailing into a Wildlife Documentary on the Great Barrier Reef

The two destinations in this video – Sudbury Cay and Michaelmas Cay – are the reason we set sail up the North Queensland Coast in the middle of a La Niña summer.

Our goal was to see if instead of the howling southeasters that have prevailed over the last of Australia’s three consecutive La Niña years throughout the ‘typical’ cruising seasons, we might find calmer conditions for accessing less sheltered parts of the Great Barrier Reef.

Spoiler alert: there are no glass-outs here – but we definitely found magic. ✨

In fact, I’m still pinching myself that we were able to visit the places we did, and particularly Michaelmas Cay, which is one of the most important seabird rookeries in the southern hemisphere, with up to 20,000 breeding pairs recorded.

This is the sort of place you might actually expect to bump into David Attenborough and a BBC Wildlife film crew.

In their absence, I give you the ‘Brilliant II’ crew. 🤪

It’s a privilege to be able to share this video with you; I am grateful for my little family, who are doing this journey called ‘life’ with me, and for our ‘Brilliant’ boat, that takes us to places like these.

Enjoy!

💙 @shazatsea (IG)

Pardey Time at the Whitsunday Sailing Club!

As soon I discovered that the inimitable Lin Pardey would be sharing her story at our local Whitsunday Sailing Club, the first thing I did was ensure my whole family and I were booked in. Like many cruising sailors, I'm a Pardey fan, so the chance to see...

After spending an unexpected and extended amount of time fixing the hull-to-deck join, bulwark, scuppers and caprail, it’s been nice to move back inside Brilliant II to continue the interior refit. Next on the list has been our “Hobbit Hole”, or as...

Toe-tally Brilliant!! How to Restore the Cap-Rail on a 45-Year-Old Monohull

We did it!! Well almost… The final piece of our hull-to-deck-join puzzle was the teak toe-rail, which, like everything else about this job, needed a drastic fix in order to ‘cap’ it off (pun intended). When we initially removed the rail from the...

We’ve Been Scuppered! How to Fix Damaged Bulwarks, Scuppers, and Deck Gear Attachment Points

In the words of the inimitable Lady Gaga: “Once you kill a cow, you gotta make a burger”. Or as we Brits would say: “In for a penny, in for a pound”. Both of these sayings refer to that place you go, when you’re so far down a particular rabbi...
