This is a video during the start of leg 5 (a) of the 2013-14 Clipper Round The World Yacht Race from Brisbane to Singapore.
We started very well but had to turn back because there was a problem with our electric systems. Because of which we were delayed by more than 24 hours. This meant we were always trailing the fleet, but we made up distance along the way and almost caught up with the boat that was in front of us.
In this video, I am in charge of the Yankee sail.
This type of start is known as the LeMans start. Where the mainsail is up but the headsails aren’t and the entire team is standing behind the wheel. At the word go, everyone runs ahead to their positions and starts with getting the Yankee up and gets the boat up to speed.
After the first part, there are a few videos of us in bad weather and tidying up the sails. You can see me as usual without a shirt 🙂 working away on the foredeck.
