A Special Episode – Hurricane Plan

In this special episode, Natalie and James address the hot topic of hurricanes and their plan if they are faced with a hurricane during their stay in the Bahamas. It’s their first time not fleeing from the hurricane belt, which brings many questions from their patrons about safety measures.

What is a Hurricane?

A hurricane or tropical cyclone is an intense storm system characterized by a low-pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and flooding rains. They form only over warm ocean waters near the equator where warm moist air rises, creating an area of low pressure. The surrounding high-pressure air pushes into the low-pressure area, causing it to swirl.

Forecasting with the National Hurricane Center (NHC)

The NHC website is an essential resource for tracking hurricanes and their potential paths. Natalie and James have been closely monitoring the website daily since June, keeping a close eye on any developments or forming tropical depressions or storms.

Researching Hurricane Holes

A hurricane hole is a safe anchorage for boats during a hurricane. Natalie and James have researched several hurricane holes in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Northern locations such as Oriental, North Carolina. They also plan to contact marinas in these areas for potential shelter.

The Hurricane Plan

Their hurricane plan includes keeping their boat prepared to sail at any time with fuel, water, and food supplies on board. Additionally, they have backup plans like moving northward to Jacksonville or even flying out if needed.

Community and Support

Living among other cruisers provides a sense of community and shared knowledge on dealing with hurricanes. Natalie and James have discussed evacuation procedures with local residents, ensuring they have options if staying aboard becomes dangerous.

Wrapping Up

As the hurricane season picks up in intensity with La Nina facing worse conditions compared to 20 years ago, Natalie and James are determined to stay vigilant and prepared. They trust their forecasting tools, friends’ support, and their well-thought-out plan to navigate through potential storms.

Conclusion

This episode highlights the importance of preparation, planning, and community support when facing hurricane season while cruising. As they continue their journey, Natalie and James encourage viewers to join them in wishing them luck as they embark on this challenging adventure.
