Navigating 11ft Waves: Engine Starvation at Sea – Ep. 237

Welcome aboard the Sailing Zephyr for another captivating episode of our world sailing journey. In this exciting episode, Episode 237, we embark on a thrilling adventure from the tranquil haven of Marsh Harbor towards the lesser-known treasures that lie in the Abacos.

Leaving Marsh Harbor

Fueled with excitement and curiosity, we leave behind the calm and protected waters of Marsh Harbor. Marsh Harbor serves as the main hub for provisioning, laundry, and providing shelter in its marinas – all within unparalleled protection against most winds. As Sailors seeking sanctuary from rough weather often flock to this location, we bid it adieu knowing full well the adventure that awaits us beyond.

Confronting Unfavorable Conditions

Navigating through Whale Cut Passage under normal, favorable conditions is already a prudent choice, but facing unexpected 11 ft waves near the shallowest part of the passage poses a significant challenge. The force of these massive waves can disrupt even the most robust boat’s fuel supply, potentially leading to fuel starvation and engine failure.

Engine Starvation Incident

In our case, encountering these waves coincided with a sudden depletion of fuel that caused our engine to falter. It was during this crucial moment that James grabbed the extra jerry cans and filled up the tank, saving us from an otherwise dire predicament. Having such supplies aboard proved invaluable, allowing for immediate action in response to the crisis.

Narrowly Avoiding Disaster

If our engine had continued to falter despite adding extra fuel, or if the issue had escalated beyond this, we would have had no choice but to rely on our sails and head out into the Atlantic. However, as fate would have it, the engine began performing smoothly once more, sparing us a potentially devastating turn of events.

Discovering Green Turtle Cay

Acknowledging our good fortune, we set our sights on Green Turtle Cay, a destination that provided us not only with much-needed relaxation but also with pristine beaches and hidden gems like the Bluff House restaurant and its charming swings. With a new appreciation for the beauty of Green Turtle Cay, we knew our journey had taken an unexpected turn for the better.

Safe Navigation through Whale Cut

A week’s worth of beachcombing and relaxation in Green Turtle Cay led us to set sail once more, this time passing through the Whale Cut under far more favorable conditions. As we continue our southward journey towards uncharted waters and further adventures, we cherish every experience shared along the way.
