Fixing a SAILBOAT TOILET...Is this the WORST JOB on a SAILBOAT? | Sailing Zephyr - Ep. 241

In this episode we are back at the boat repairs with another big toilet installation. A little easier than the previous electric toilet we added, but still a whole lot of s#!t to deal with.

We also continue our discussion around buying a 4 stroke or stroke outboard engine.

We manage to break away from the boat jobs and spend some time snorkeling and taking the dogs for some much needed exercise. It's a week of dirty jobs and beautiful scenery...such is the live-aboard life on a sailboat.

Hope you enjoy the video!

Fixing a SAILBOAT TOILET…Is this the WORST JOB on a SAILBOAT?

Welcome aboard, as James and Natalie tackle yet another maintenance task in their series. This week they dive into sailboat toilet maintenance, specifically installing a new manual toilet while servicing the old one. The Importance of Toilet Maintenance on Sailboats Toilet maintenance is crucial in any boat, especially for cruisers who rely on proper sanitation and waste management systems. A well-maintained toilet ensures a hygienic living environment and minimizes the risk of plumbing issues while sailing. The Installation Process: Step-by-Step Guide James and Natalie share their experience with replacing a manual toilet tower. They begin by removing the old, worn-out hand pumps, which have served them well over time. After cleaning out the remaining hoses, they prepare for the new toilet installation. With an ordered unit costing less than service kits, they decide to replace the entire assembly, resulting in a cost-effective solution. Addressing Calcification and Mold Growth During the process, Natalie demonstrates how to remove calcification from the toilet’s hoses. Using a heavy object, she forcefully bangs on the hose until all deposits are dislodged. The pair also takes this opportunity to clean mold accumulation behind the toilets due to the tropical climate, ensuring their living space remains sanitary. Testing the New Toilet Installation After reassembling and connecting all hoses and pipes, James and Natalie excitedly test the newly installed toilet. With a successful installation, they’re relieved to find it functions perfectly, proving their initial fears were unfounded. Enjoying the Fruits of Their Labor on a Beautiful Beach Walk Although the installation process proves challenging, James and Natalie quickly forget their troubles as they enjoy an evening walk with their dogs at the beach. Embracing the beauty of sunset, they remind viewers that even amid challenging tasks, there’s always joy in the simple moments while living on a sailboat. The Life of a Sailor: Constant Adaptation and Maintenance The couple reflects on how weather conditions continuously impact their lives, with a recent storm reminding them of the constant need for maintenance and adaptation. With an average wind speed of just over 30 knots during the storm, James and Natalie are glad to see everything on their boat holding up against adverse weather conditions. Final Thoughts In conclusion, this episode emphasizes the importance of proper maintenance and upkeep on sailboats for a comfortable cruising experience. It also highlights the camaraderie between sailors, relying on community support and advice to overcome challenges. For those seeking further assistance or support for their own sailing endeavors, James and Natalie encourage viewers to become patrons, subscribe to their channel, or participate in discussions in the comments section below. Let’s keep cruising, friends!
