Two-Stroke vs Four-Stroke Outboard Engine

In today’s video, Natalie and James from Sailing Zephyr discuss their ongoing search for a new dinghy motor to replace their trusty 2-stroke Tohatsu. With over 5 years of heavy use, the couple weighs the pros and cons of upgrading to a more modern 4-stroke outboard engine.

Why Choose a Four-Stroke Outboard Engine?

<!– wp:paragraph —

The main reasons for considering a four-stroke engine are quiet operation, better fuel efficiency, and reduced environmental impact. Two-strokes tend to be louder and use more petrol, often requiring mixing of oil and petrol. Natalie and James have also experienced difficulties finding two-stroke oil in some places they’ve traveled.

Other Considerations

The couple mentions that four-stroke engines can be more complicated to maintain, especially when parts go wrong. On the other hand, they’ve greatly appreciated the simplicity and ease of maintenance with their current 2-stroke engine. In addition to the technical aspects, budget plays a major role in this decision, as new motors can come with significant costs.

Their Potential Choice

Natalie and James have been considering a Yamaha 204 4-stroke outboard motor for their dinghy. They’ve looked at other brands like Suzuki, Tohatsu, and Mercury as well. The decision ultimately lies in the balance of budget, reliability, and ease of maintenance versus the benefits of a quieter engine and improved fuel efficiency.

The Mix Ratio for Their Current Two-Stroke Engine

<!– wp:paragraph —

To mix fuel for their current 2-stroke engine, they use a container with marked ratios indicating the required oil-to-fuel ratio. In their case, it’s a 50:1 mix, and they’ve found a convenient bottle that displays the correct ratios.

Conclusion

Natalie and James continue to weigh their options while considering practicality, budget, and efficiency. Ultimately, they hope to make a well-informed decision on the best outboard motor to suit their needs for both performance and reliability.
