I’ve finally posted the episode where Yabá gets her brand new sails! It’s been a long build-up to this moment, and seeing her finally draped in new cloth feels incredible. There are still plenty of adjustments to be made to get them to fit perfectly, but getting them up in the air is a huge milestone.
I’ve never installed new sails before, let alone gaff-rigged sails, which I’d never even sailed before this project. It’s all completely new territory for me, but with a bit of common sense and plenty of trial and error, I think we're actually getting somewhere!
Can you believe that just a couple of hours after bending them on, we set sail without doing a single sea trial? I guess you could say this entire 170 nautical-mile passage from Vitória (Espírito Santo) to Caravelas (Bahia) became our official sea trial. Luckily, only minor tweaks were needed, and we were able to make those adjustments right on the fly.
Even though Caravelas is just a quick pitstop, it feels amazing to finally arrive in Bahia, a place I’ve wanted to explore for a very long time. As I rush up the coast, I’m scanning anchorages, logging destinations, and plotting the best spots as we pass so I can return soon to dive deeper into the local cultures, remote islands, and everything else this region has to offer.
If you have any advice for a gaff-rig rookie like me, please drop it in the comments! Any tips to help me tune this rig to her full potential are always welcome.
