💙 Who are we?
We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

Hoisting the Sails on our Restored Boat — Sailing Yabá 216

<-- wp:paragraph --> After spending today ensuring we have everything we need to sail, it’s finally time to hoist the sails. We’ve been working hard all day, so let’s get started!<-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Tightening the Rigging <-- wp:paragraph --> We began by tightening all the stays and rigging on our boat. This was crucial for ensuring smooth sailing and efficient operation of the furling systems. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:image {style:'width: 100%; display: block; margin: auto'} --> <-- wp:paragraph --> The first order of business was to tighten the main furling system, which is crucial for rolling and unrolling the sail. We also had Arturo on board to help with various tasks throughout the day. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Preparing the Sails <-- wp:paragraph --> Next, we gathered all the sail-related items on the boat and prepped them for installation. We also received some much-needed supplies, including six low friction rings and additional hardware. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Hoisting the Sails <-- wp:paragraph --> The day has finally arrived to hoist our sails! We’ve been working towards this moment for a while, and it feels fantastic. Let’s go step by step through how we managed to hoist those sails. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Step 1: Tighten the Stays <-- wp:paragraph --> The first thing we did was tighten all of our stays. We found that some were loose, but with some adjustments and fiddling, we got everything nice and tight. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Step 2: Prepare the Furling Systems <-- wp:paragraph --> We then prepped our furling systems. We found that the front furling system needed a few adjustments, but ultimately everything looked good to go. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Step 3: Hoist Sail #1 <-- wp:paragraph --> The first sail we hoisted was the forward one. We got it up and rolling, which felt fantastic! We were thrilled to see our hard work pay off. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Step 4: Hoist Sail #2 <-- wp:paragraph --> Next, we hoisted the second sail. It went up smoothly and looked great rolled up at the bow of the boat. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Step 5: Hoist the Main Sail <-- wp:paragraph --> The final sail to hoist was our main sail. We attached it, got it up and rolling, and it fit perfectly. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Conclusion <-- wp:paragraph --> We successfully hoisted all three of our sails, making a huge milestone for us on this project. With everything in place and working smoothly, we’re ready to sail! <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:separator -->
<-- wp:heading --> What’s Next? <-- wp:paragraph --> Next, we’ll be working on completing our running rigging. This involves finishing the sheets for each of the furling systems, which should tie everything together nicely. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:heading --> Don’t Miss Out! <-- wp:paragraph --> If you enjoyed watching this progress on our boat restoration and want to see more, be sure to hit that subscribe button. We’ve got lots of exciting updates coming up as we get ready for our next adventure out at sea. <-- /wp:paragraph --> <-- wp:separator -->
